Iceland

These portraits were created on location in and around Reykjavik, Iceland in 2014. and combined with images of the original handwritten documents of Icelandic Sagas which date back to the 13th century. These documents, stored in the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies, convey a powerful sense of historical context.  DNA lineage in this isolated country is so undiluted and well-recorded, going back to 9th Century settlement by Norwegian Vikings, that these faces seemed to me to be looking directly out of history. i am increasingly interested in playing with visual elements as layers and context in my portraits. Each of us carries our history with us, stories of the people behind us and the place we come from. Something in the beauty of the text seems to me a direct and authentic evocation of that history and asks the viewer to look at the subject in a deeper way.
